Solar tubewell systems are perfect machines in areas with a lack of electricity. Water availability is a big factor for almost every agricultural land. Even developing nations that receive a good amount of water through rainfall fails to be efficient in the field of agriculture.
Humans are dependent on water for survival. To meet the daily water requirements, we pump our water from wells, dams, and rivers. In this tutorial, I have explained in steps how you can obtain water from sunlight energy. Solar Tubewell systems are becoming extremely popular nowadays and here is how you can also design one.
You will need the following things to make your tubewell system run from solar power.
1. Solar Water Pump
You will need a 3 phase submersible water pump. The pump basically uses the power supplied from the solar panels in order to pump water from the source. The pump has 4 wires: 3 wires for each phase and one wire for Ground.
Choose a suitable pump depending on your requirement. The submersible pump price in Pakistan for a 250-watt motor typically ranges from Rs.10,000 to 20,000. They come in various brands, so you can choose whatever you like.
2. Solar Panels
This is the main part of the project and first, you need to determine the power of your system. Let’s say, a 1.5 Hp motor is approximately equal to 1120 watt. In this case, we are operating the pump directly from the solar panel. So you will need double the power i.e (3000 watts).
Now you have the power in watts, you can estimate the number of panels needed to run the pump. In this case, I am using a 280-watt solar panel. There are a lot of options available in the market.
No of solar panels required will be (3000/280)= 10.7
Approximately 10 solar panels will be needed. Solar panels are usually installed on special ground or pole mounting structures. To gain maximum output, place them in a position where direct sunlight is falling.
3. Solar Pump Controller
The Solar Pump System controller is a box-shaped device and a very vital part of the setup. It basically regulates the current supplied to the pump from the solar panels. Most Controllers come along with LED indicators.
The solar pump controller converts the DC voltage input to a 3-phase AC output with variable voltage and frequency. At the sunshine varies during the day, power input to the controller varies and the Solar controller generates variable V/F ratio thus controlling the speed of the motor, which in turn regulates the pump impeller speed.
You can purchase these boxes from a lot of online stores depending on your requirement.
Wrapping up
Solar tube well systems are specially designed to lift water for irrigation, horticulture farms, and Gardens. These systems are the best alternatives for areas where there is no electricity or scarcity of power supply. The specially designed panels can withstand extreme weather conditions such as storm, rain, and dust and are impact resistant.
